Spring 2009 | 2222 Visual Thinking for Design

Project 5

Project #5 : Belonging to the Design Community

Designing and Developing a WebPage

Objectives:
• Finding your place in the design community
• Learning to look into the past to find the present
• Exploring a topic of your interest
• Expressive use of typography and illustrative means
• Understanding of the power of communication.
• Use of color as expressive means
• Designing and building a BASIC webpage using Photoshop and Dreamweaver.
• Uploading a html file to the web
• Learning to combine type and imagery in grid systems.

Description:
Design and build a webpage about the designer/design group/movement you have researched. The piece is to reflect visually the style/technique or anything that you have learned about the designer/artist. You may incorporate type as part of your composition. Use the design of your calendar as a spring board for the website.

Be creative. Think outside the box (excuse the cliche). You may even think of this project as an online zine or an experimental net design/art piece. Again, color is unlimited but less is often more. You will be required AGAIN to design the basic grid system for your website. Looking at and dissecting existing websites will help you to see what kinds of things need to be done to be successful. Remember that in organizational design, not only does the placement of structures affect the outcome, but also the specific decisions about each individual structure, such as weight and relative importance. You can skew the hierarchy of a design by careful choices of type treatment, graphic elements and photographic treatments. Design an example of the grid system itself and see how the grid applies to the needs of your design.

Begin to think about site architecture and create a site map (Due next class). Next, you will create the design of your site. The design must be completed before you take it into dreamweaver.

Parameters:
The parameters are fairly open for this project. Basic Guidelines are as follows:
1. Must reflect the research you have done on your designer/movement/ group
2. Use the design from calander as a spring board. You can use examples of your designers work.
3. Use a GRID
4. Must have a minimum of 4 working internal LINKS
5. This cannot be a portfolio site. My goal is that you can put this inside of a porfolio.
6. Extra credit if it is uploaded to the world wide web.
(Yes, we will access our MSCD server space!)

Project Due Dates:
Site Map  + Design: April 28
All Pages Completed: April 30
Process Critique: May 7
Final Version:  May 12
